In theory, this right ensures that every person belongs to a nation and is not left “stateless.” But in practice, this right has often been disputed and misused across the world.

• बांग्लादेश: यहाँ पर रोहिंग्या शरणार्थियों (म्यांमार से आए) को नागरिकता नहीं दी जाती। 10 लाख से अधिक रोहिंग्या शरणार्थी अब भी राज्यविहीन हैं।
• म्यांमार: 1982 के नागरिकता कानून के तहत रोहिंग्या मुसलमानों से नागरिकता छीन ली गई। यही कारण है कि वे सबसे अधिक उत्पीड़ित और विस्थापित समुदाय बन गए।
• पाकिस्तान: अफगान शरणार्थियों (करीब 30 लाख) को दशकों से नागरिकता नहीं मिली। जबकि जन्म से नागरिकता देने का प्रावधान मौजूद है।
• नेपाल: महिलाओं और विदेशी पति/पत्नी से जन्मे बच्चों को नागरिकता देने में जटिलताएँ हैं। कई लोग जन्म लेने के बावजूद नागरिकता प्रमाणपत्र पाने के लिए संघर्ष करते हैं।
• श्रीलंका: तमिल अल्पसंख्यक लंबे समय तक नागरिकता से वंचित रहे। अब सुधार हुए हैं, लेकिन भेदभाव पूरी तरह खत्म नहीं हुआ।
